We didn't feel that the plot was too convoluted because of the change of direction due to different Directors. My friends and I (in our mid to late 20s) all thought it was incredible, definitely up there as one of the best Pixar films. He played it off like it was fun so it wouldn't scare them.īut instead, Mor'du was just some evil dude from long ago. That meant that the first time Mor'du attacked them when Merida was a little girl, her dad knew what was going on the whole time and decided not to tell them why they would always be attacked by that bear. My mind immediately jumped to the conclusion that Merida's father was the larger brother. During one of the flashbacks, you see four brothers and one of them is huge. There was a hint of backstory to Mor'du with the conflict with his brothers. This was the closest they've come to a cookie-cutter "Disney" story, and Disney at least has interesting villains even if they aren't fleshed out well all the time. Ego's scenes in Ratatouille were some of my favorite parts. Mor'du doesn't have any scenes to himself.

That being said, I would have liked the movie much more if they had given us a good villain. D:Īs a male who has never been part of the mother/daughter conflict, I know there is a part of this movie that could never reach me the way it could a female. Mastered and reproduced in 64 channel sound. And if you're lucky enough (as I was) to have seen it in one of the 15 theaters in the US with Dolby's new "Atmos" tech, it's a treat on your ears as well. Oh and the animation is the best that's ever been committed to celluloid. We've all become very spoiled when it comes to the excellent films Pixar puts out, and while this lacked the genius that some of their stories exhibit, it was still an enthralling tale about an atypical princess (refreshing in the disney canon) and her relationship with her mother. WHAT did she ever do with that bow? She shoots Mor'du a few times to little effect, that's it.Īll that said, I really enjoyed the film. It's a parable about keeping a story focused, and the metaphor is nearly literall in Brave because. There's a saying in screenwriting that says to never show a gun hanging on the wall if you don't intend to eventually fire it.
The story becomes more about her fixing the situation she put her mother in. With all the build up of Meridah riding and shooting effortlessly through the forest and her rebellious protest of her suitors, it felt odd that she doesn't really DO much of anything the rest of the film. The whole tone switches about 30 minutes in. While Ratatouille felt like a single, cohesive story with a focused arc, Brave felt like a movie that switched directors halfway through. Ratatouille followed a similar arc, but they brought on Brad Bird who oozes genius out of his ears. So they brought on Mark Andrews pretty late in production to clean up the mess.
At some point Pixar decided that whatever direction it was heading towards, it needed someone else to steer the ship. Brenda Chapman was the director of this film at it's inception to about halfway through production. Brave started out it's life as "The Bear and the Bow".
